Porcelain painted with gold seems fragile and demanding. In fact the care rules are simple, and if you follow them the painting will outlast more than one generation. The main thing is to remember that the gold is applied by hand and fixed by firing, not glued on top.
It's best to wash by hand, in warm water with a mild detergent. A dishwasher isn't forbidden, but harsh tablets and high heat dull the shine of the gold over time. If you value the painting, spend a couple of minutes on hand washing.
What gilded porcelain definitely dislikes is the microwave. The metal in the painting and microwaves don't mix: there will be sparks and damage. Abrasive sponges and powders are also off limits, they scratch both the pattern and the glaze.
It's better to store cups and plates so the gilded edges don't rub against each other. Place a soft napkin between plates. With such care an author's piece will stay bright for years.
